St. Marc Essay Scholarship Contest
The DuSable Heritage Association with its partner school The James M. Stine College in St. Marc, Haiti launched its first DuSable Heritage Association Essay Contest. The James M. Stine College is a private secondary school in St. Marc, Haiti. It welcomed its first students on October 3, 2011. The James M. Stine College offers quality secondary education to young women and men from the region and to those whose schools collapsed during a major earthquake in 2010. The Clercs de St. Viateur, a religious congregation of priests and brothers, direct the school. It currently serves over 350 students in 20 classrooms with a total capacity is 800 students. The James M. Stine College plans to add 10 additional classrooms, raising the school capacity to 1000 students. The DHA Essay Contest invited students to respond to DHA by December 31, 2015. The goal of the DHA Student Essay Contest is to motivate students to practice their thinking and writing skills in order to increase their achievement level. The program also aims to increase self-esteem by promoting a positive history and culture while conducting historical research about their own country, their people and/or their contributions to the history of the world. DHA hopes that the student writing contest increases civic literacy; helps to engage and enhance writing, comprehension and research skills and strengthens student’s understanding of history.
